Musician, producer and music blog curator from Ukraine Yurik Popov goes by 58918012 for his dark ambient music alter ego. “Music is one of those few things that makes me truly calm and happy. Sometimes it’s coming from outside, sometimes from the inside, but it’s always my feelings. There’s nothing more to say.”
On his latest release, the three track EP titled Three States, the artist explores three compositional ideas. With the airiest track on the EP, ‘Gas’ trip-hop is the most visible genre with nods to downtempo and experimental sounds taking centre stage.
After trialing a range of synths and different approaches, it was the carefree whistling of the melody that he chose to bring the leitmotif to life and into the sound. Ambient sonic texture lay an eerie and haunting backdrop, riding over the developing clattering of the percussion as the sound builds and weaves through his interpretation of the gaseous state.
