BAD PERSON is the Boston-based music project of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Joshua Pritchard. Pritchard creates wistful, endearing, filmic soundscapes that shrewdly blend both analog and digital sounds. He cites key influences of his sound as R.E.M., Thom Yorke, and Miles Davis.
Following the release of a full length album, today BAD PERSON brings us an exclusive premiere of his first music of 2020 with an EP lined up for later this year. The new track, Safe Habit comes as a collaboration with Idolized Productions/beat-maker LaToya “Lil’ Face” Drakeford and with renowned New England recording and production engineer Dave Westner on mixing duties.
Commenting on how the collab came about, the artist offers, “I discovered LaToya’s work on Instagram. I’d only been working with Ableton and other beat-making software for a short time, so it was really inspiring to see and hear the work of someone who knew what they were doing. Her stuff is also a great mix of trap beats and unique melodies. I reached out about collaborating and we were off from there. I learned a lot working on this project. At the beginning of the track there’s a voice that says ‘Idolized Production,’ which I wanted to leave in as a tribute to being inspired by her work.”
Continuing on the nature of the song, “In terms of what the song is about, I tend to fuse together a bunch of different things that are on my mind when I write. I read ‘The Age of Surveillance Capitalism’ by Shoshana Zuboff last year. She believes the tech giants have created this magical age to which we’ve all quietly surrendered, which I reference in the lyrics. I realised late in the process I was also writing about the recent loss of two friends. But I think it’s in a mournful and salutary way, not in a depressing way.”
With the new music, a curious introduction fades to breathe a rich spread of varied instrumentation. Brooding synth slabs to plucky guitar colouring work to build an intriguing sonic backdrop where Pritchard’s tranquil vocal delivery soothes as the beat pocks and clacks along. Laying down a fine balance of tender writing, elegant melodies and breezing rhythms, BAD PERSON drops a truly alluring effort with Safe Habit.
“The work used in ‘Safe Habitat’ was made to be a blank canvas for the artist use. It consists of sounds outside of the normal Trap/R&B I create on a daily. When I was approached by Bad Person, I knew he add the artistry I was looking for to paint a picture and sent it over the beat. I am excited for fans to hear the project.” adds Lil Face.
