Asta Hiroki is an electronica/experimental hip hop producer and visual artist based in Brighton, UK. Having honed his craft working as a composer & audio specialist in the world of contemporary dance, video games and moving image installations his works are typically nuanced, textural and deep beats with an ethereal quality usually found in film soundtracks.
Drawing from jazz, electronica, post-Dilla hip hop, lo-fi and glitch music he builds layered compositions in his own brand of intelligent and modern, soulful electronica. Flitting between downtempo hip hop, ambient moments and glitchy compound-time signature beats it’s a widespan sound yet always constructed with the same attention to detail and jazz sensibilities.
The ever growing electronic & indie label – Future Archive Recordings – moves to release their 2nd compilation album, featuring an all-star cast including label favorites il:lo, Arms and Sleepers, Sun Glitters, and Yppah, as well new to the label artists like Asta Hiroki, Kognitif, Daily Bread, Michal Menert, and more. The compilation explores an eclectic range of electronic genres, weaving in and out of downtempo, future garage, lo-fi, instrumental hip-hop, dark synth, indie electronic, and future R&B.
Commenting on the track, the artist offers, “You & Me is an abstract, lofi hip hop beat that was built upon a simple but haunting melodic phrase and vocal sample. The interplay between a drunken bass line and lazy Dilla-esque boom bap style drums drive it forward, providing the kind of head-nodding qualities and unexpectedness I try to look for in hip hop. Meanwhile the vocal refrain: “Dreaming of you and me” gives it an hazy, weightless and esoteric feel. Think it probably falls somewhere like if Knxwledge meets Portishead – it’s dreamy, nostalgic, and a little bit wavy around the edges. Like the best kind of people.”
