Swiss-Serbian producer and visual artist Typewriter brings us his debut offering with the single Kalemegdan, lifted from his forthcoming debut album. It comes to the surface after years of intensive songwriting and producing for other artists – and what a way to make an introduction. Commenting on his sound, Typewriter has said, “I started playing all kinds of different instruments very early in my life. My fascination for sounds was beginning at this point. If one element would describe my music it would be water. I always had a fascination for open water and waves so there’s lots of fluid elements in the sound design of this record.”
With Kalemegdan, the artist pulls the listener through a dreamy and delicate electronic soundscape – before, just as the waves he draws inspiration from, it crashes and erupts with a euphoric flurry of synthesised crescendo. Eastern influences subtly thread through the melodic offerings as slowly punching percussive shots drive the chorus sections, with twisting spliced instrumental sampling peppering the sound with new rhythmic energy.
On his first single release he says, “The track is a mixture of old, warm elements painted by new world sounds – analog and digital – that gives rise to a retro aesthetic.” For Typewriter, this track represents losing yourself in the moment and is by and large a journey of self reflection; discovering the roots of his musical soul. “For me, making music means being in the moment. No thoughts of yesterday, no thoughts of tomorrow. Only the moment counts.”
Typewriter has worked exclusively as a ghostwriter and producer for various artists over the past 10 years and has been awarded gold and platinum on several occasions. In the meantime, behind closed doors, the musical DNA of Typewriter was born through passionate experimentation with new sounds and an unparalleled devotion to sound design. He dedicates the track to his Serbian roots; a park in front of the fortress in the historical centre of Belgrade.
